Watercolor on Oil Canvas?

Erenus Gallery in Ankara asked for paintings on 30x30cm canvases for a group show called "Art in Squares" and I joined in with two paintings done with transparent watercolors on regular stretched and treated acrylic/oil canvases!
Being a purist at heart I couldn't have imagined myself doing this but as advised my friend Nicholas Simmons one has to concentrate on being an artist not a purist!
The first painting is a study on gessoed paper as a peparation for the other two done on acrylic/oil canvas.Bahadır Gökay from the gallery who also is a fine artist sealed(with a brush while I held my breath!) the paintings with a special mixture he uses for his paintings. It contains bees wax, turpentine and a stuff unknown to me.It gives the paintings a very nice sheen.

Fantastic Nusret, and it's nice to see you trying new things. Hard for a purist, but I think Nick's right. Such freedom!

I agree about not being a purist - as you've proved abundantly here, with these lovely watercolors. Hard to believe they are on canvas. Wonderful work.

Nusret,
I adore the looseness of these paintings. There is a special watercolour canvas you can buy these days in the States…. I haven’t tried it, but I think you seal it with a special product from the same manufacturer...But I’m sure you know this already.
Did you have many problems with the watercolour not adhering to the acrylic gesso on the canvas?
You are such a brave soul with a purist heart.

Maggie thank you so much.
Re problem with watercolour not adhering to the canvas;surprisingly no!It just feels different comparing with paper. This may not mean all ready made canvases accept wc same thou!

Congratulations on your show and your foray into watercolor on canvas! Are these canvases gessoed or pre-treated from the factory? Wonderful job! I especially love the first and third!

Great stuff Nusret! did you use standard watercolours or acrylics diluited as watercolours?
However what's important is the final image and your images are really well done.

Alessandro-Thank you for visiting my blog and leaving a message.
It is all transparent watercolours.I even don't have any acrylic paints(except those for aircraft modelling from 15 years ago)!

These are wonderful Nusret! Did you have to increase the strength of the watercolour at all? Did they soak into the canvas much? Very interesting!

Hi Patty, thank you very much for stopping by.

I applied the paint as usual,no further increasing of the strenght. The paints surprisingly well soaked into the canvas!

Nice yorks on canvas!! But I have a question: Do these wc on canvas still need to be protected under glasses?

Nusret Topuzoğlu said...

Hi Nikos, thank you for stopping by.
Re your question;yes they need to be protected but not under glass.Maybe you can do it too but I don't imagine how?As I explained above the paintings were sealed by some sort of varnish.

Thank you Nurset. I believe that any acrylic varnish will also do fine!
